This past couple of weeks, three events in the United States reinforces my belief that this is indeed a great country where impossible, improbable and seemingly unrealistic dreams can indeed become reality if one works hard, believes and refuses to take no for an answer. The Boston Celtics were one of the NBA’s worst teams last basketball season. In 2007 when Senator Barack Obama floated the idea of running for the Presidency of the United States of America, most people laughed and some were not so subtle in telling him to wait a few more years, get some experience. Tiger Woods just had knee surgery and many people advised him not to play golf for a while. What ties these three stories together is the spirit of overcoming odds and winning. Kevin Garnet is (was) probably the most ridiculed player in the NBA for “his inability to win the big game”. Ray Allen slaved away in Seattle for many years but was traded to the Celtics. Paul Pierce is one of the most hard-working basketball player in the league. He has been with the Celtics through the rough years of not winning. The common thread that ties Garnett, Allen and Pierce together is their humility. These are a few of the most humble millionaires you can find anywhere. And Tiger woods, bad knee and all, probably played his best golf ever in the recent Open Championship game. Barack Obama has made history with what he has managed to accomplish this election cycle: he totally turned American Politics on its head by re-defining the way and manner politics is played – even in the darkest days of the primary campaign, he refused to be baited into the old-style politics of personal attacks; he took on a political powerhouse in the Clintons and prevailed; he has raised more money than any politician in American history – without taking money from special-interest groups; he totally resurrected popular politics which had declined to its lowest level ever; he is on the verge on becoming the nation’s first Black president; he, wittingly or unwittingly has energized the national electorate and has made it possible for Americans to talk about Race and Gender – topics that were “uncomfortable” to talk about in previous dispensations.
The truth of the matter is, we do not need to drop bombs on other nations in other to show them what kind of society we are. The story of the Boston Celtics, Tiger Woods, and Barack Obama is possible in America because we are a free society. We are a society that gives every individual an opportunity to pursue their dreams. We have our differences, no doubt, but at our very core, we are Americans and in this country, any thing is possible.
