The Poverty of Ideas in the Republican Party: Part 2

October 9, 2008

“Those who have had a chance for four years and could not produce peace should not be given another chance.” – Richard Nixon

“No way to deny it. The current Republican party hates intelligence and competence. It’s become a Know Nothing spectacle led by Sarah Palin. I will ignore my own years of neglect of this topic, and instead concentrate on where the GOP is heading. Neither subject, by the way, is pretty.” – David Broder

Is this unbelievable or what. On the day the DOW Industrials dropped below 9000 points and the federal government was contemplating taking over some of the nations bank; when the country of Iceland was on the brink of bankruptcy; when GM, one of the giants of the American automotive industry was on the brink of collapse; the McCain campaign was complaining about the picture of Sarah Palin on the cover of Newsweek. If that does not tell Americans where the priorities of Senator John McCain lies, I do not know what will. How could a man the country holds in such a high esteem be reduced to a slimy two-faced hollow shell of a man? This is really a very sad season in American politics for the Republican Party.

Is it not amazing that despite the myriad of challenges facing the country at this moment the so-called bright minds of the Republican party cannot come up with a comprehensive program to rehabilitate the country from the ravaging visited on us by George W. Bush? Is the morale so low that the McCain campaign can not even get a policy paper together that they can present to the American people that says here is what we are going to do? How about coming up with a grand plan on how to get us out of our quagmire in Iraq? Would it have been too much to ask for someone in the numerous conservative “policy centers” in the country to, at least, pretend to be earning the millions of dollars of grant money they waste every year by telling us how to engage in proper nation building in Afghanistan seven years after the fact? It would not have been out of place to come up with some story about restoring the conservative agenda, whatever that means. The problem is these self-righteous wingnuts have spent the last eight years consolidating power and perhaps forgot that power is transcient.
